What is Abhyanga?

Abhyanga or self massage is an ancient practice of self-care designed to promote longevity.

Ayurveda — also know as the “Science of Life” — teaches that our health and longevity are supported by the small rituals we repeat each day. One of the reasons I fell in love with Ayurveda, and decided to become an Ayurvedic Practitioner, is because of its simplicity and logic rooted in ancient practices based on the natural world. Ayurveda recognizes that every individual is unique — with different body types, lifestyles, relationships, and spiritual goals. Ayurveda offers personalized ways to stay balanced through life’s challenges and changing seasons. Every individual has their own unique dosha (body + energy type) as well as different doshic imbalances. We need to make choices in our daily life to help balance, protect and heal ourselves in order to live a long healthy and disease free life.

Why follow Ayurvedic practices?

Just as we brush our teeth to prevent cavities or dress warmly in winter to protect ourselves from the cold, Ayurveda encourages us to care for our entire being with daily rituals that nurture our body, mind and spirit and adapt with our changing environment.

So what is Abyhanga?

One of my favorite Ayurvedic self-care practices is Abhyanga — a daily self-massage with warm herbal oil, in which you massage your entire body with nourishing oils. By adding Abhyanga to your routine, you will calm your nervous system, promote lymphatic drainage, nourish all the body’s tissues (especially the skin, muscles, and blood), and help support your immune system. In Ayurveda, oils are used to increase Ojas — your body’s natural vitality and protective energy, also known as your immune system.

My personal experience with Abhyanga:

After six months of regular Abhyanga, I’ve noticed I feel calmer throughout the day, happier, and more grounded. My muscles even seem more toned and resilient. This simple act of self-massage has become one of my favorite ways to reset, replenish, and reconnect with myself. My personal favourite oil is the Pitta Soothe oil, which is desinged for mildly sensitive skin and a tendancy to feel warm often.

At the clinic, during each massage treatment, I offer Ayurvedic Abhyanga Oils formulated for each dosha — whether you’re feeling heavy and lethargic, anxious and stressed, or hot and irritable, there’s an oil blend to bring you back into balance. My oils are hand made by me and infused with healing Reiki energy. I also play the sacred sound of Om each time i make them. The massage oils are 100% natural and intracatetly desinged with the doshas needs in mind.

You can book an Ayurvedic Assessment with myself to discover your dosha and current imbalances and to find out which oil is best for you. Or book a Full-Body Abhyanga Massage to feel the full rejuvenating effects of traditional Ayurvedic oils.
